Homelessness

Different way to begin /open a conversation around homelessness with students and staff that avoids the false assumptions and biases that many have around the homeless.  This gives a supportive framework: one which some will agree /disagree about, a framework whereby a solution is being sought by civilians rather than finger pointing. Doesn’t discuss the root causes, but that could be step 2.

Resources following on from Gift Box Workshop held in Loreto Stephen’s Green – 7 March 2017

A  group of Loreto Sisters are involved in a project called the UN Gift Box. This project introduced people
to the issue of Human Trafficking and has inspired people to take further action.

Human Trafficking is the fastest growing international crime and is the third largest source of income
for organised crime. Shockingly Ireland is a destination and source country for women, men and children
subjected to sex trafficking and forced labour, including forced criminal activity and forced begging.
Trafficking for forced marriage is a also a newly recognised issue being tackled.

In 2014 the Loreto Sisters made a commitment to work for the elimination of all forms of human trafficking
particularly among women and children, and have been involved with the project titled the UN Gift.

The Gift Box is a walk in piece of public art, symbolising the way traffickers entice their victims with false promises; offering “the gift” of a brighter new life.
True stories of human trafficking are recounted inside the box.

Narrated by Emmy-award winning actor Brendan Gleeson, Atlantic follows the fortunes of three small fishing communities – in Ireland, Norway and Newfoundland – bringing to the fore three very intimate stories from the global resource debate.

Atlantic 2016    Last year, The Development Education team of Loreto Secondary School Navan hosted a screening of Atlantic, the powerful documentary which discusses the environmental and political issues in the North Atlantic. The event took place in The Solstice Arts Centre and over 250 local students attended for the screening followed by a lively question and answer session with director Risteard Ó Domhnaill.

A second public screening was held that night and many members of the local community attended.

Narrated by Brendan Gleeson Atlantic follows the fortunes of three small fishing communities as they struggle to maintain their way of life in the face of mounting economic and ecological challenges.

‘This incredible film is a must-see for anyone who cares about the planet we live on and about the natural resources of the Atlantic and Ireland. It deserves all the publicity it can get to bring this important issue into the public forum’ – Loreto Navan – Peace and Social Justice Group.
